Kirin

He was doing everything wrong. He needed to tell her she was his mate. But he still hadn’t wrapped his mind around having found her. There was something about this woman that made him mess up. He couldn’t pull off his usual air of indifference around her because… he cared, dammit. Kirin cared about her. He cared about everything she cared about. And it was utterly screwing him up.

Kirin groaned. “I’m sorry.”

She frowned. “For what? Almost getting me killed earlier? I’m still alive.” She smiled, and instantly, his heart thumped harder in his chest.

“I will make sure he dies next time.” His smile quickly faded when he saw her eyeing him curiously.

“You don’t smile much. In fact, in not one of the trillion memories that flashed before my eyes did you ever smile. What’s going on?”

He shook his head. He couldn’t tell her. She wasn’t ready to hear that they would be together forever because his dragon had chosen her.

“Let’s focus on Alida. Let’s work on saving her. And we’ll save you by default.” He reached out and laid a hand on her arm because he couldn’t help himself. “We’ll fix this. We’ll make this right. I promise.” He swallowed hard. Thinking about the potential loss of Talia made him more emotional than he’d ever been.

As if her name had summoned her, Alida walked into the kitchen, rubbing her eyes. “About time you got here.”

Kirin couldn’t hold back the chuckle. “You knew I would come? Why did you stay?”

The little girl rolled her eyes. “Kael said you would come.”

Talia stopped making the sandwich she was working on. “When did you talk to Kael?”

Alida ducked her head. “I’m sorry. I used my powers.”

“It’s okay. Kael told me he would talk to you. I also brought your medicine. Do you want to take it?” Kirin felt like it was her choice.

“No, not yet.” Her eyes glazed over for a second. If he hadn’t been watching her so closely, he would have missed it. “Bad men will come.”

Talia cleared her throat. “Here, you need to eat this. Let’s go sit in the living room.”

Kirin watched as the two people most important to him walked to the living room. He sat in silence and wondered how his life had changed so much in less than twelve hours. Alida and Talia giggled on the couch. The sound made his dragon happy. The fucker was flying around in his mind. He wanted Kirin to throw Talia over his shoulder and claim her.

Kirin sat next to Talia. Alida climbed off her side of the couch and onto his lap. It stunned him for a second before the young girl reached up and patted his face. “You will protect us.” Then she went back to eating her sandwich.

Talia curled up next to him. He needed them to rest—he knew they would have a fight coming soon. He would need to contact his brothers. Kirin would do anything to protect these two. Once Alida finished eating, she curled up in his arms.
